Political generation gathering - Climate Majority Project
Today’s youth are the most disillusioned generation in living memory. Everything feels too relative or absolute to imagine real change. We are gathering our bodies and souls to reawaken the spark that makes life worth living, connecting with where, what and whom we belong to.
A residential gathering at Furnace Brook, September 3rd - 8th 2026
Politics is about navigating our individuality and togetherness in the pursuit of human flourishing. In a society that is obsessed with breaking things down to the smallest possible units, we have a politics where we are driving ourselves all together, while looking straight into our lanes, off the edge of the world. Beyond electoral politics, beyond parties that are two sides of the same coin...
It is time for those of us who haven’t given up to embrace political economy again. We must remember our non-separate (and thus inherently political) selves as a key to collective agency. For if we don’t, we give up on living, together.
Want to read more about the next Political Generation? See here.
We will gather for five days, in a space of restoration and brave inquiry for people aged 18-35 who are wandering off the beaten track to find our place in this stormy world. During this time, we will hold dialogues about what it means to be political today, in the deepest sense of the word. We will also explore practices like ecstatic dance, all while learning how to live together in community by camping, cooking, gardening, cleaning, and living together.
Over five days, in nature and with each other, we’ll be touching on the following topics:
What is politics, in the deepest sense of the word. Why does it feel so dirty today, and how does avoiding it get in the way of achieving systemic change?
How deeply engrained the notion of an end of history is, and how to really feel into the possibility of the world being very different within our lifetimes. Politics is being creators of history, and partaking in its stream.
The link between education and democracy: what are the training grounds for being good citizens today, how do we make those institutions more effective, and create spaces where people who are interested in how society works can learn about it?
The political necessity of beauty — and the link between moral and aesthetic ambition, building on our recent inquiries
Our personal journeys and challenges in carving a life with integrity in a society that rewards selfishness and the pursuit of capital above all
National Emergency Briefing community screening and discussion: Friday, September 4
On the Friday we’ll be joining the wider community around Furnace Brook for a screening and discussion of the People’s Emergency Briefing. What are the challenges we face today? What people and resources and we mobilise to face them? What are the inner, human struggles we might face in doing so? These are deeply political questions, and we’ll be discussing them from that perspective. Panelists include Villo Leskes (civil servant), Liam Kavanagh (Climate Majority Project Co-Director), Pooran Desai (The Bioregional Development Group Director) and other special guests. This will be an opportunity for the residents of our gathering to participate in a place-based political discussion, to bring back into bigger-picture themes.
No particular background or belief system is required—only a willingness to step together into the unknown.

Film Night - National Emergency Briefing
Join us at Furnace Brook for a special film screening of the National Emergency Briefing.
The climate and nature crisis threatens all aspects of British life from national security to food supply, but solutions exist. The National Emergency Briefing was commissioned to present the latest evidence. They have created a film which is being screened across the UK as a calling to the Government to ensure the public is informed, prepared and protected.
Following the screening of the National Emergency Briefing, we’ll discuss: What are the challenges we actually face? What people and resources do we need to mobilise to meet them? What are the inner, human struggles that come with doing so? We have a group of expert panelists, to help us answer some of tehse questions.
Panelists include:
– Villo Leskes, Water systems expert
– Liam Kavanagh, Co-Director, Climate Majority Project
– Pooran Desai OBE, seriel social entrepreneur, founder of Oneplanet.com
– and other special guests?
Set in our lakeside barn, this relaxed evening is an opportunity to come together, reflect and learn about food security & climate resilience .
What to expect:
Screening of a thought-provoking film
A welcoming, informal atmosphere in our barn space
Optional discussion after the film
Bar open for drinks
Parking available
This event takes place alongside The Raft's political generation gathering for people 18–35 – five days of dialogue, land regeneration, and inquiry into a question we keep circling back to: what does it actually mean to be political today?
Most people feel society is failing and are tired of business as usual. When we look at what this way of life has done to climate and nature, the need to come together and imagine better ways of organising various sectors of society – food, water, education, policy – become apparent.
Beyond electoral politics, beyond parties that are two sides of the same coin. We understand being political as a dance between self and other, between the individual and the collective, as claiming agency as creators of history as opposed to surrendering to a system. It's not a system we opt into; it's just what happens when people try to live together on the planet, so that as many human and more than human lives can flourish.
Residents of the week-long gathering will join as participants, bringing this place-based conversation back into the bigger-picture themes they've spent the week exploring – cooking, gardening, and living together (including with fish and goats!). But this session is a chance to open up to the wider community around Furnace Brook – you don't need to be part of the residency to join.
Curious about what we mean by the next Political Generation? Find out more here or join the whole gathering.

Imagining Thrutopia - Climate Majority Project
Imagining Thrutopias II: The Best Possible Futures We Can Actually Have
A residential gathering at Furnace Brook, September 23-28 2026
Last year we began a difficult inquiry: not into what the ideal future might look like in theory, but into what the best future we could actually navigate toward might feel like in practice. We call this thrutopia — getting through what is coming as it comes as well as possible, without pretending collapse won't happen, and without pretending a good future needs to be perfect.
This year we’re going deeper. Sign up below.
Thrutopia as a living process, not a destination
One of the traps of utopian thinking — including much progressive thought — is the compulsion to arrive somewhere: to describe the endpoint, agree on its features, defend its coherence. But Ursula Le Guin, one of the sharpest navigators of this territory, understood that utopian imagination becomes dangerous the moment it freezes.
The kind of thinking required to change the goals of human domination and unlimited growth toward those of human adaptability and long-term survival involves "acceptance of impermanence and imperfection, a patience with uncertainty and the makeshift." This is thrutopianism: not a map but a direction, not an answer but an ongoing practice.
This year we want to take seriously the dialectical nature of this process — the way a genuinely thrutopian imagination has to hold tension between what we hope for and what is actually possible, between the present's constraints and the future's genuine openness. In Le Guin’s words, the present is not stable — "it is the product of constant change." Octavia Butler in her Parables was perhaps indicating something very similar.
Thrutopia is what we do in that space.
The questions we'll carry through the week:
What does it mean to hold thrutopia as an ongoing, revisable process rather than a destination? What does that ask of us emotionally and intellectually?
If the future we're imagining is to genuinely involve the majority of people — not just the already-convinced — how does that change what and how we envision?
How does awareness of silent majorities and the better values they want to live by create a solid ground upon which we can imagine thrutopias?
What are the places, practices, and relationships that make this kind of imagination possible? What are we building when we build those?
Where does thrutopia live in the body, in daily life, in the small-scale and the local?
